How to Know if You Need Dental Implants

How to Know if You Need Dental Implants

Replacing missing and/or damaged teeth using dental implants to secure the restorations is a discussion you should have in person with your dentist, but here’s some information on how to know if you need dental implants in the first place.

Dental implants hold dental restorations in place so that they look, feel, and function like natural teeth. Typically, the implant is a titanium post that is surgically placed into the jaw to take the place of the root of the damaged or missing teeth and to support the replacement tooth or group of teeth.

Because they’re imbedded into the jaw, dental implants transmit the force of chewing directly to the jawbone, which helps reduce bone loss and preserves facial structure.

So, how do you know if you need dental implants?

Missing Teeth

It’s always better to replace missing teeth with restorations, not just to maintain a beautiful smile, but for jawbone health and overall oral wellbeing. Missing teeth can cause problems for chewing and for speech. And the rest of your teeth can shift, causing even larger issues as time goes on.

Loose or Improperly Fitting Dentures

If your dentures are loose or no longer fit properly, it may be time to consider replacing them with dental implants. You won’t have to endure the pain, discomfort, and other problems that come from ill-fitting dentures. Replacement teeth attached to dental implants stay secure, so you never have to worry about them sliding or falling out.

Loose Dental Bridge

Like loose dentures, loose dental bridges can be painful and worrisome. If your dental bridge has become loose, it may be time to consider dental implants as a longer-term solution.

Chipped or Damaged Teeth

Sometimes, a chipped or damaged tooth can be repaired with a crown. But if the damage is extensive and/or if it has extended to the root of the tooth, a dental implant may be necessary as a foundation for the replacement tooth.

Difficulty Chewing

If you experience painful or difficult chewing, consult with your dentist right away. This can be a sign of a broken or cracked tooth, or it could indicate bone deterioration. You may need dental implants to help correct the underlying problem.

Changes to Your Facial Structure and Appearance

Both missing teeth and dentures can lead to bone loss or deterioration in your jawbone. And this can make your face start to look sunken and caved-in. Dental implants help reduce bone loss and deterioration because your jaw is still stimulated when you chew due to how the implants are imbedded.

How to Know — for sure — if You Need Dental Implants

The only way to know — for sure — if you need dental implants is to talk to your dentist about it. While a very good option that benefits many people, dental implants may or may not be the best choice for you in your specific situation.
