Why Your Teeth are Sensitive

Why Your Teeth are Sensitive

If you’ve been experiencing pain or discomfort in your teeth that’s not constant but is a response to certain triggers, you may be wondering why your teeth are sensitive … and, perhaps more importantly, what you can do about it.

If this describes you, you’re in the right place.

First, let’s define the symptoms of sensitive teeth. According to the Oral Health Foundation, “having sensitive teeth can mean anything from getting a mild twinge to having severe discomfort that can continue for several hours.”

The symptoms occur in response to stimuli that your teeth are exposed to. The most common triggers are:
  • Hot beverages or foods
  • Cold beverages or foods
  • Sweet beverages or foods
  • Acidic beverages or foods
  • Cold water
  • Cold air
  • Brushing or flossing teeth
  • Mouth rinses, especially those that are alcohol based

Reasons Why Your Teeth are Sensitive

There are a number of potential reasons for why your teeth are sensitive. For example, the American Dental Association says possible causes include:
  • Tooth decay (cavities)
  • Cracked or fractured teeth
  • Worn fillings
  • Gum disease
  • Worn tooth enamel
  • Exposed tooth root from aggressive tooth brushing and or receding gums
Now, tooth sensitivity can be treated. But to get to the cause of your particular tooth sensitivity issue — which you must do in order to determine the appropriate treatment — you first must see a dentist for a thorough examination.

Treatments may be as simple as changing your oral hygiene habits like changing your toothpaste, toothbrush, and/or mouth rinse.

Other treatments — like flouride gel or varnishes, desensitizing treatments, fillings, crowns, inlays, bonding, etc. — are performed in a dental office.

If you are experiencing sensitive teeth, you don’t have to just grin and bear it. Help is available, and we want to provide that help for you!
